Sandra Oh’s Curly Hair Journey: Embracing Her Natural Curls

Sandra Oh, born in Nepean, Ontario, Canada, is a celebrated actress known for her roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve. Throughout her career, she has received numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award and multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards. While we may not all share her level of talent and recognition, many curly-haired individuals can relate to her journey of self-acceptance.

Growing up, Sandra struggled with her thick, curly hair, often trying to conform to beauty standards that favored straightened hair. In an interview with Elle, she shared her experience: “Traditional beauty ideals define Asian hair as raven black, silky smooth, long, and pin-straight—not this thick, coarse, dense, frizzy thing I had to beat into submission all my life.”

Sandra’s journey mirrors the experience of many curly-haired women, facing societal pressure to conform to mainstream beauty ideals. Over time, she began to embrace her natural curls. In a YouTube interview with NET-A-PORTER, she discussed her evolving relationship with her hair: “I love it but growing up, it was a journey to understand and appreciate my hair.”

To manage and enhance her curls, Sandra works closely with her hairstylist, Ted Gibson. He emphasizes the importance of regular trims to prevent split ends and maintain the vibrancy of her curls. “I always say women should change their hair at least a couple of times a year. It gives a little freshness and a little bounce in your step,” Gibson advises.

Sandra also uses specific hair care products to maintain her curls. She enhances her natural curls with a $40 curling iron, as recommended by her hairstylist.

Her transformation from attempting to tame her curls to celebrating them is a powerful reminder that self-acceptance begins with embracing who we truly are. By learning to manage and care for our natural hair, we can embark on a journey of self-love and appreciation, just as Sandra has.
